There is one reality we cannot deny – one of the most consistent aspects of technology is that it is forever changing.  Many of the fundamental tools we once used age, become obsolete and are replaced with new tools.  Internet Explorer?  Adobe Flash? A thing of the past.

Unfortunately, technologies that have been discontinued become a risk, leaving your practice vulnerable to attacks.  Sure, older technologies and software may run fine on your systems, but all that means is that it runs fine – it certainly does not mean that it is ok, or safe, to be using.

The biggest danger?  All that old tech can lead you right down the road to a data breach.

This is because outdated hardware and software stop receiving critical security updates.  No updates means that vulnerabilities are no longer being patched.  No more patching means your practice becomes a sitting duck.

Think about it.  Approximately 1 in 3 data breaches are due to unpatched system vulnerabilities.

Another big issue is that using obsolete tech leaves you, well, obsolete and in the dust.  Customers begin to wonder at what point you’ll come out of the stone ages.  The stones ages certainly does not help with time, efficiency or profitability.

Here’s why you must keep your software and hardware updated to the latest supported versions.

  • Reduce the risk of a data breach or malware infection
  • Meet data privacy compliance requirements
  • To keep a good reputation and foster customer trust
  • To be competitive in your market
  • To mitigate hardware and software compatibility issues
  • To enable employee productivity

The clunkiness of old systems get in the way – period.  Employee productivity takes a dive and frustration levels rise.  Both of which have a negative impact on your practice, it’s operations, and customer satisfaction.

Did you know that workers actually leave their jobs because of poor tech?  That’s right, 49% of those surveyed to be exact.

It’s time to kick the outdated tech to the curb.  For the sake of your business and personal sanity.  Here’s what you need to replace as soon as possible.

Get Rid of This Tech Now If You’re Still Using It

Internet Explorer

Some people loved it, some hated it.  Either way, that point is moot.  It used to be the number one browser in the world, but got edged out by other browsers such as Chrome.

As of June 15,2022 all support for this browser stopped.  That means you need to stop using it.

Adobe Flash

Adobe Flash Player was used by millions of websites back in the day, but new tools soon replaced the neat things it could do.

As of January 2021 it stopped receiving critical security updates.  Adobe ended it.  So should you.

Windows 7 and Earlier

Windows what?  Seem like ions ago, but you would be surprised at how many systems are still running Windows 7 (others even still running XP!).

Windows 7 stopped being supported by Microsoft on January 14, 2020.  Yes, it may run, but it is time to drop this dinosaur as it is now one of the prime targets for hackers.

macOS 10.14 Mojave and Earlier

iMacs and Macbooks cost a lot and last a long time.  Sadly, once these devices to a certain age, updates no longer work and you find yourself in a situation where your hardware is stuck running on an unsupported macOS.

Running macOS 10.14 Mojave or earlier?  You are no longer supported by Apple and need to upgrade.

Oracle 18c Database

Does your practice use Oracle databases?  If so, then check your current version. Unpatched system vulnerabilities lead to breaches, so if you are running Oracle 18C, then you are once again a sitting duck.

As of June 2021, the Oracle 18C database lost all support.  You need to upgrade.

(also note that as of April 2024 versions 19C and 21C will lose premiere support.)

Microsoft SQL Server 2014 & Earlier

Microsoft SQL, one of the most popular database tools out there.  What version are you running?

If you say 2014, then just know that mainstream support had ended already.  As of July 2024, all support will end.  This includes security updates.

If you say something before 2014, then the urgency is greater.  Upgrade now before risk becomes something worst.

Reduce Your Risk and Get Help Upgrading Your Technology

We know upgrading can be a scary thought or may even seem unnecessary if everything has been running great. But know this, the issues that can arise from not upgrading far outweigh any issues that may arise during the upgrade process.
